Matt Bish and Wally Reed explain the importance of a positive outlook while selling tickets for the New Jersey Nets. The Nets are currently mired in one of the worst seasons in NBA history.
Having to sell tickets for one of the worst teams in NBA history has to be a tough job, but Matt and Wally seem to be getting their part done within the organization. Being able to do your research and learn from other sources throughout will help each person to sell tickets the best way they can. Of course you need to work hard and go far and beyond to have a successful career in the sports industry. We’re lucky enough to have this video reminder to help us stay on track towards or goals and dreams.
A job in the Sport Industry can be categorized as glamorous and fun because of all of the money that is earned, in particular by the athletes, within the industry, but after seeing the video, reality only sets in that a job in the sport industry may not be that glamorous at all, and does require a lot of hard work. Take for example, a ticket job with the New Jersey Nets. The Nets are a terrible team, but somebody has to do the dirty work, so to speak, of selling products to people that do not want to see that product because the product is horrible. To do so, it requires some innovation and creative strategies to draw the fans as well as some research into a company to see if they would be willing to invest in your product, as Mr. Bish points out in the video. One can only imagine how many times a ticket representative is turned down by potential customers based on the sheer fact that the Nets are having one of the worst seasons in NBA history, yet, as a ticket sales representative, you are still required to get people in the seats. One would have to think that it is an arduous and tedious task, especially when the product is lackluster, but it is still necessary or the business will not thrive. The fans are obviously a big source of income, and it is not the athletes, well maybe indirectly the athletes have some influence, which draw the fans to the seats. The athletes are a great selling point, but somebody has to do the groundwork, and that somebody comes from the ticket sales representatives. So even though sports is thought of as a glamorous industry to be in, one realizes that, through the interview with Mr. Wally Reed and Mr. Matt Bish, that there is a lot of hard work from not-so-high-profiled athletes that go in to making an organization successful.
Mr. Reed and Mr. Bish are doing a great job for the New Jersey Nets which is a tough organization to work for at the moment. After hearing them speak to our class and watching this video clip I learned that the biggest strength which you need to have is hard work/dedication. You have to know who you are dealing with, if a person is dealing with a company or an individual you should learn more about them. This will make the future sales to them a little bit easier, you will know what their likes and dislikes are and they will also feel better speaking with a representative that they know. Not only in ticket sales does this apply but also in life and any other job that people try to get.
I think that the position that Matt Bish and Wally Reed find themselves in is a classic example of “buy low/sell high”. On Wall Street, wise investors frequently looked for stocks with low prices that have the potential to rise greatly. This can be risky, but the potential reward is greatest in this situation. Likewise, Matt and Wally currently work for an organization that struggles to sell a large number of tickets. However, one way of looking at the situation is to say that this only means the organization can go nowhere but up. If Matt and Wally can learn to sell tickets and build a customer base while the Nets are a terrible team, they will be in a great position to reap significant rewards if/when the Nets return to prominence. Essentially, they have “bought in” at the lowest point in Nets history, and therefore will be able to “sell high” when the Nets turn things around.
